Major week. Major modifications.
Defending U.S. Open Champion Wyndham Clark will be playing a similar setup to which he gamed at LACC last year but with a few tweaks to help deliver the best possible consistent ball strike. Clark worked with Titleist tour reps this week to make some forward bounce adjustments to his wedge setup to help match his swing to the conditions at Pinehurst No. 2. The course is playing firm and fast, which is not unusual for a Major Championship, though with the sun baking and drying the Bermuda greens, precise wedge shots will be as crucial as ever.
Adding forward bounce on his pitching wedge through lob wedge helped Clark hurdle the low spin, high launch he was seeing early in the week that was leaving his ProV1x a few yards short of his typical carry numbers. This is where Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill and Shane Dyel stepped in, working with Clark to hand grind the right amount off of each wedges leading edge, also known as a pre-worn leading edge (which is a WedgeWorks Hand Ground option you can add to your raw SM10 Wedges). This creates a slightly steeper angle on the forward sole and creates more bounce without sacrificing playability of what the sole naturally does. Wyndham has created more forward shaft lean recently with his wedge play, causing the bounce to decrease. This pre-worn leading edge moves the bounce forward, allowing Wyndham to slide under the ball smoothly with that forward shaft lean.
