Major Prep: Max Homa’s Adjustments for Royal Troon

Major Prep: Max Homa’s Adjustments for Royal Troon

Typical Open Championship turf conditions are firm and tight. So much so, that the best players in the world adjust their wedge grinds to accommodate the turf conditions they’ll face for the week.

Titleist Brand Ambassador, Max Homa made two grind changes leading up to The 152nd Open.

Max’s typical sand and lob wedge setup week in and week out on the PGA Tour consists of a 54.14 F Grind and a WedgeWorks 60L (see top row). This week Max worked with Vokey Tour Reps Aaron Dill and Will Harvey to move into grinds that would suit the tighter and firmer conditions than he typically faces.

In the 54 degree wedge, Max moved into a 54.10 S Grind from the 54.14 F Grind. The S grind not only has less bounce but also a narrower sole due to the trailing edge relief. This will allow the leading edge to sit a bit lower to the ground and reduce the likelihood of the trailing edge would bounce off the firm turf.

Max made a change in his 60 degree wedge as well. Max moved from a WedgeWorks 60L to a WedgeWorks 60A. Though they are two different grinds, they are related. The original A Grind was made from an L Grind by smoothing out and softening the edges of the grind on a grinding wheel. This allows the leading edge to sit lower and reduces resistance through the turf, giving it a faster feel through the turf of Royal Troon.
